THE EMPEROR OF THE MOON: A COMEDY

RESTORATION DRAMA
The Emperor of the Moon is a comical farce written by Aphra Behn in 1687. The Emperor of the Moon was, after The Rover, her second most successful play, probably due to the lightness of the plot and its accompanying musical and spectacular entertainment. The music is largely lost today. The play was not fitted out like a big opera, producers would not dare to finance a costly opera after Drydens Albion and Albanius had flopped and the company had accumulated much debt. The plan was to make audiences come back to the playhouse and attend an affordable mini-spectacle like The Emperor of the Moon.
